One of the top recruits in the country commits to Minnesota
One of the most coveted high school recruits in the Class of 2025 has committed the University of Minnesota women's basketball team.
Makena Christian, a 5-foot-11 forward from Hartford Union High School – located just northwest of Milwaukee – announced Wednesday night her intention to play basketball for head coach Dawn Plitzuweit and the Golden Gophers.
Christian is rated by ESPN's HoopGurlz as the No. 39 recruit in the Class of 2025. She's the No. 1 player in Wisconsin and only one player in Minnesota is ranked ahead of her in the national rankings for 2025, and that's Minnetonka 5-star recruit Aaliyah Crump, who remains undecided on her college plans.
"I would like to officially announce my commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at the University of Minnesota," Christian announced. "I would like to thank God, my parents, friends, family, teammates, and coaches for their support through this journey."
Christian is averaging 25.5 points per game this season as Hartford Union is ranked sixth in the state of Wisconsin and boasts a 22-2 record entering the postseason.
Christian, who played AAU basketball with current Gophers freshman Grace Grocholski, also thanked her coaches for "giving me the opportunity to live out my dream of playing D1 basketball."
"I couldn't be more excited to see what the next four years will hold for me!" she added.
