Just A Bulldog Minute: What Mississippi State Baseball Needs To Improve On Eight Games In
Mississippi State baseball is currently sitting at a 4-4 overall record after winning two-of-three against Georgia Southern in Starkville this past weekend.
Although it is still early into the season, there is a lot that Bulldogs head coach Chris Lemonis and his squad can do to improve the team if they want a chance at contending in the SEC this season.
A lot of times, the Diamond Dawgs' offense seemingly does not wake up and when they do, it's a bit too late. For the season so far, the Bulldogs have a .278 average and a .396 on-base percentage as a team.
Going back to games such as their mid-week sweep from Austin Peay the other week, it is clear the the Bulldogs' offense needs some improvement, because if the bats can't wake up at the right time, it isn't going to be pretty moving forward.
Furthermore, the pitching has seemingly improved under new pitching coach Justin Parker, but there is still work on that end that needs to be done, especially from the bullpen.
There are times, especially from the aforementioned Austin Peay series, where the Bulldogs had several opportunities to close the game out but just couldn't get it done. These mistakes on the mound, topped with the struggles on the offensive end, have created some cases of a late game collapse from the Bulldogs.
While again, it's still early in the season so there is still a lot of time to improve before the Bulldogs enter the harder part of their schedule. However, these are the two glaring issues this team has had eight games in.
Up next for the Diamond Dawgs, they host Jackson State in Dudy Noble Field this Tuesday, with first pitched scheduled for 3 p.m.
