Hunter Hines Lands Preseason All-American Honors By Perfect Game
Hunter Hines received preseason All-American honors by the website Perfect Game on Thursday when he was named a third-team selection at first base.
Hines, a junior who can play in the infield an outfield, has slugged his way into contention for a first-round draft pick next spring. Last year, Hines batted .297 with 22 home runs and 61 RBIs. He was among the few bright spots in an otherwise dreadful spring for the MSU faithful.
The 6-3 210 lefty is in contention to break Mississippi State baseball's all-time home run record, held by Rafael Palmerio with 67. Hines currently sits with 38 career homers.
Another feasible record Hines could break is the single-season home record, which is 29. Both Palmerio and Bruce Castoria currently hold the record.
Along with chasing the MSU home run record, Hines is expected to play in the field full-time for the first time in his career. Last year, Hines and senior Luke Hancock split duties at first base, but Hines is expected to take over full-time this season.
As always, MSU baseball has Omaha aspirations, and if the Bulldogs want to reach those goals, Hines should take another step forward offensively and defensively. Opening day is February 17th, and the Bulldogs will take on Air Force to start the 2024 campaign.
