Three Takeaways From Mississippi State Baseball's 21-2 Win Over Grambling

The Bulldogs started the week off strong heading into the weekend series against Alabama.

It's been anything but any ideal season for Mississippi State baseball (17-13, 1-8) as the team has struggled to maintain rhythm, has had issues on the mound and has been dismal for the better part of conference play.

But the Bulldogs excelled offensively excelled against the Grambling Tigers, earning the 21-2 victory. 14 different players reached base and five of those players had a multi-hit game supporting the overall score.

Here are the three takeaways from Tuesday night's game:

1. Hunter Hines remains consistent.

Hines is constantly improving and it shows on the field game in and game out, despite some of the discombobulation the Bulldogs have experienced. Tuesday night, he started things out with a bang with his first at-bat a home run right down the right field.

Hines didn't stop there, either, one of five players that had a multi-hit game and had five total RBI to finish the night while going 3-for-3 against Grambling. Although Hines already showed potential last season, it is evident the work he put in over the offseason has boosted him to a new level.

2. Team chemistry is improving.

MSU's got the talent, just not the consistency to this point in the season. Looking at an individual player's stats and what they do individually in each game begs one question: Why have the Bulldogs not won an SEC series yet?

And one of the primary answers is team chemistry, something within the players that has not yet fully clicked. In the victory over Grambling the Bulldogs did an excellent job of staying on the same page and not looking too far ahead. Together as a team, they stayed in the present of the game and it worked out in their favor.

The primary thing will be keeping that going against higher-level competition as the season continues.

3. Morale boost.

After reaching a historic low, there has been plenty of concern and very little optimism surrounding MSU baseball. Regardless of how formidable the opponent is, in this situation, a 21-2 win should boost the Bulldogs into playing better and being more competitive against Alabama this coming weekend as the team continues to search for a conference series win for the first time this season.

MSU is set to take on Alabama in Tuscaloosa on Thursday, April 6th at 6 p.m. CT.
