Transcript: Everything Mississippi State Coach Chris Lemonis Said After MSU's Series Win Over No. 2 LSU
Mississippi State baseball was a complete underdog heading into the weekend series against the No. 2-ranked LSU Tigers, something that was completely warranted considering the lengthy losing streak the Bulldogs were on in the midst of a season filled with historic lows.
But it's truly any given day in baseball, and the Bulldogs should be happy with what they accomplished in Baton Rouge, winning the final two games of the series after being run-ruled, 12-1 in the first meeting.
MSU bounced back in the following pair of contests with a 9-4 win on Saturday and a 14-13 win over 10 innings Sunday.
Head coach Chris Lemonis met with the media at the end of the action:
Question: "This was a big series win. Does it feel special to you?"
Chris Lemonis: "To come in here and play the way we did. We fell behind in the fourth inning, 13-4. The way our season has been going, our team could have just put their heads down and quit. That’s the biggest compliment I could give them. They just keep playing hard. They show up to practice, they get after it, we give up some leads every once in a while, but they have the ability to keep fighting and playing back."
Q: It ended up being a battle of bullpens. What can you say about yours?
CL: "After TD had the one inning, I went up and down the dugout saying ‘somebody in our bullpen is going to slow this game down.’ He was the one to do it. In a game like that, you have to get a hold at some point and TD was the guy who got us the hold. He got it to the backside of our bullpen. And Aaron Nixon was really good."
Q: "When Colton hit that ball off the top of the wall, did you think maybe this just isn’t (wasn't your) day?"
CL: "I probably don’t do a good enough job yelling at Amani. We got a bad read…and then it comes back that Amani gets the big hit there to get that last inning going. It always comes around. But it was a tough break. You think it’s a homer, and then you don’t get the homer, it’s a tough break. I’ve been the third base coach whose had that happen before. My head coach is ready to kill me. I know the feeling. The guys just kept fighting through things."
Q: What kind of a table-setter was Mershon for you today?
CL: He was special. And he can steal bases. He can do some special things for you. Really good weekend for him.
Q: "What does it mean to you and your staff to have a big weekend series win and beat a great team like this?"
CL: "It’s just validation. They’ve kept coaching, and they’ve kept coming to the ballpark every day, giving their best. It’s hard. When you have a couple of tough weeks and you’re in the hard part of your schedule, you can make a lot of excuses. Our coaches have stayed locked in, coaching, and we’re seeing our guys do some really good things."
