Josh Hubbard Named SEC Basketball Freshman of the Week
He's only played a handful of games, but Mississippi State basketball freshman guard Josh Hubbard is already accumulating an impressive collection of hardware.
Fresh off being named the most valuable player of the Hall of Fame Tipoff Tournament, Hubbard was named the SEC men's basketball Freshman of the Week on Monday morning.
Hubbard, a 5-foot-10, 190-pound guard from Madison, Miss., averaged 18 points, two rebounds and two assists in wins over North Alabama, Washington St., and Northwestern last week. In the tip-off tournament he scored 13 points against Washington St. and then 29 points in the championship against Northwestern.
Dating back to the 1988-89 season, Hubbard’s 29 points equaled the most points scored by a Mississippi State player off the bench.
"He [Hubbard] was a big reason why we won the game," Mississippi State head coach Chris Jans was quoted as saying in release after the tournament win. "The kid's got a ton of confidence. I talked about him already in his infant career, but I don't get tired of talking about him because he's all about the right stuff.
"He's earned these moments already because of his work ethic, because of the type of kid he is, the quality of his character and the work that he's put in prior to coming here. He's ready for this stage, it's very obvious. He's just mature beyond his ears."
The last Mississippi State player to collect SEC Freshman of the Week was Reggie Perry, who accomplished the feat twice during the 2018-19 season. The Bulldogs are off to a 5-0 start this season.
Meanwhile, Texas A&M forward Henry Coleman III, a 6-foot-8, 245-pound senior who averaged 16 points and 12.5 rebounds in wins at SMU and over Oral Roberts, was named the SEC Player of the Week.
