Just A Bulldog Minute: A Case For Josh Hubbard as SEC Freshman of the Year

The star freshman has been on a tear all season long and now has back-to-back games of 30-plus performances.

STARKVILLE, Ms – Josh Hubbard has been all you can ask for if you are a fan of the Bulldogs. Last season the issue was the offensive output but with the recruitment of Hubbard, the offense has hit a 180 on its production.

Notable stats for the freshman for this year include the most made 3-pointers in the SEC, five-time SEC freshman of the week, eight 20-plus point performances that tie the national lead and having a top 10 scoring average in the conference.

Hubbard is averaging 16 points per game but over the past five games, he has averaged 21.2 which also includes his five-point performance against Ole Miss. In the most recent games, he has scored 30 plus which has put him fifth all-time in freshman scoring (466) in Mississippi State history.

Some will have arguments about the other notable guard playing in Kentucky with Rob Dillingham and Reed Sheppard coming off the bench as they are some of the most productive freshmen in the conference as well.

Sheppard and Hubbard dueled in their most recent matchup with each going for career highs in scoring. The freshman Kentucky guard scored 32 points and hit the game-winner while Hubbard scored 34 points finishing his night by hitting three straight 3-pointers to get the Bulldogs back into the game.

Hubbard has all of the qualities of being named Freshman of the Year but will need big performances in this closing stretch to solidify his case.
