Just A Bulldog Minute: The Ultimate Glue Guy In Cameron Matthews

During this three-game win streak that the Bulldogs are on, Cameron Matthews has been an integral part of the team’s overall success.

What does the term “glue guy” mean in the form of basketball? Think of a player like Draymond Green who might not light the stat sheet up, but a player who brings energy to the team when it is needed and who can also make key plays in the game from pure effort alone.

If you want to focus on the little things that he does for the team, Cameron Matthews has been the ultimate glue guy for Mississippi State.

Since their back-to-back losses against Ole Miss and No. 13 Alabama, the Bulldogs have been on a run thanks to the defensive presence of the senior from Olive Branch, MS. During this winning stretch, he has nearly averaged a double-double with points and rebounds alongside a couple of blocks and steals a game.

In the first win on this streak against Georgia, he was a stat sheet stuffer. He completed the game with nine points, three steals, four blocks, and assists with 11 rebounds. That could be a career game for anyone defensively but he followed that with his career-best seven steals against Missouri that helped the MSU get its first road victory of the season. Against Arkansas, he was impactful on the offensive end as well as scoring 17 and tied the game with under two minutes left in the game while also grabbing 10 rebounds.

But his leadership is what has been raved about the most by players such as Josh Hubbard and Tolu Smith III who constantly reiterate what head coach Chris Jans says about him being the heartbeat and vocal leader of this team.

That leadership will be needed for Mississippi State (17-8, SEC 6-6) next couple of matchups as they have key games at home against Ole Miss (Feb. 21), No. 17 Kentucky (Feb. 27), and No. 20 South Carolina (March 9) that will determine seeding for the SEC Tournament and the NCAA Tournament.
