Three Takeaways From Mississippi State Women's Basketball 74-63 Win At Texas A&M
The Mississippi State Bulldogs extended their winning streak to four games. It was an all-around team effort from MSU to get this win, but what are some takeaways from this game?
Slow Start
If anyone had an excuse for a slow start, it was MSU, as today was the third game in seven days for the Bulldogs. However, good defense for the Bulldogs kept them within striking distance, as MSU trailed 17-12 at the end of the first quarter.
The Bulldogs started the game 4-25 from the field, but a Jerkaila Jordan transition layup ignited the Bulldog offense in the second quarter. MSU ended the second half on a 16-2 run, giving them a 31-23 lead at halftime.
MSU was able to withstand the slow start, but they must have solid production off the bench that can bring instant help when they sub in. MSU has a pair of players who fill this role, and each of them brings something different to the floor.
Bench Production
The Bulldogs have a dynamic duo in their starting lineup in seniors Jordan and Jessika Carter. However, as the season progresses, the Bulldogs have quite the duo coming off the bench.
Former DePaul transfer Darrione Rodgers and freshman Mjracle Sheppard bring valuable minutes off the bench but contribute in different ways. Rogers is a willing sharpshooter who pulls up from three anywhere on the court, including today, as Rogers scored 18 points for the Bulldogs and shot 3-8 from behind the arc.
On the other hand, Sheppard's production is not consistently seen in the box score, as she scored three points today and added a pair of rebounds and assists. However, Sheppard is a relentless defender and a good ball handler and made some beautiful post feeds today.
Every team needs solid production off the bench, and the Bulldogs have just that. Rogers provides instant offense, and Sheppard provides excellent on-ball defense.
Finding Their Footing
Erynn Barnum has been a staple of the Bulldogs starting lineup all year. The former Arkansas transfer averaged 15 points a season ago for the Razorbacks, but Barnum has only averaged eight points a game this season.
Barnum has not struggled for the Bulldogs but instead has played her role and has done whatever is needed for MSU to win. However, today, Barnum's number was called often as she scored 22 points, both a game-high and her season-high.
Barnum could have easily been unhappy that she had not been a more focal point of the offense but instead opted to be a good teammate and play her role. If Barnum continues this, she will be another significant post-threat alongside Carter.
This Bulldogs team is hitting their stride as the depth of this team is starting to show, and MSU has a great chance to continue to stack wins and move their way up the SEC standings.
