Around The SEC: Alabama Football Radio Voice Eli Gold Shares Update for the Upcoming Season

After health issues kept Eli Gold sidelined for the 2022 season, the Crimson Tide received an update on their beloved broadcaster.

Eli Gold, the well-known voice of Alabama football, took last season off to recover from serious health issues that prevented him from being in the booth.

On Friday afternoon, this radio host announced that he was confirmed to be back in the booth for the 2023 season. This exciting news was shared with Tide 100.9's Ryan Fowler during a regularly streamed segment.

“Yes, so I’m coming back,” Gold said.

To get comfortable with the job again, Gold shared that he will be doing 'make-believe' broadcasts of the next few pre-season scrimmages to prepare for the upcoming fall season.

“As a matter of fact, I’m going to be doing the two scrimmages,” Gold told Fowler. “Not on the air, but the two scrimmages that the team always has on the two Saturdays before the start of the regular season, so that will be August 19 and August 26, this year. We’re gonna go into the booth and just do a make-believe broadcast.”

Gold has overcome several health issues within the past years. At 69 years old, he has dealt with shoulder replacement surgeries in 2020, and death with an orthopedic issue affecting his weight and ability to walk.

Gold has also beat a treatable form of cancer that he was diagnosed with in January, cancer-free since June.

"I was fighting for my family," Gold said on The Paul Finebaum Show. "My daughter is getting married in 2024. I wanted to be there here to walk her down the aisle, and of course my wife who has just been absolutely spectacular in helping me and being a care giver in all of this."

Although his health may have set him back away from the booth recently, there's no doubt he'll be ready to deliver an incredible broadcast to UA fans in what's been nothing short of an inspiring return that has touched many.
