Around The SEC: Greg McElroy Shares Thoughts on 2023-2024 Heisman Trophy Candidates

Talk about who could be the University of Georgia's best Heisman Trophy candidate for 2023 and why.

ESPN analyst and commentator Greg McElroy recently spoke to the way-too-early Heisman Trophy conversation ahead of the 2023 season, with an emphasis on Georgia football players.

Some of his top candidates where the Bulldogs were concerned included tight end Brock Bowers and quarterback Carson Beck. However, the discussion of Beck had some controversy when McElroy described the Heisman as a 'popularity contest.'

That particular talk spun the conversation to Bowers.

“I actually think the ball could be spread out a bit among those offensive weapons when you add 2 big transfers from the transfer portal" said McElroy.

But, though Bowers has a good shot for the Heisman Trophy this season, McElroy expressed that his best chance for the award was actually last season.

“I think Carson Beck is a Heisman dark horse,” McElroy said. “Because, if you look at the world of college football, how many teams can you tell me without a shadow of a doubt will be in the playoff mix? How many teams? Maybe 7, 8, 9, maybe if you want to extend it to 12. That’s probably as deep as you can go that would be in the Playoff mix."

With lots of talent in the fold for the Bulldogs, the healthy competition between teammates makes it hard to tell right now who would be the best recipient of the trophy.

"You have a quarterback on a Heisman-contending team that has great weapons, great support and an offense that might be moving to a little bit more pass happy so he’ll have really good numbers. Stetson Bennett was a Heisman finalist last year.”

It will be interesting to watch how things shake out when the Bulldogs open the season against Tennessee-Martin on Sept. 2.
