Former Mississippi State Cornerback Darius Slay Released By Philadelphia Eagles
With the 2023 NFL Draft approaching, coaches and staff are already in the works of rebuilding their teams. The Philadelphia Eagles are no exception, make the move the release former Mississippi State cornerback Darius Slay this week.
His three-year contract for $50 million extension had expired and Philadelphia was not able to work a new deal with the five-time Pro Bowl defensive back.
It's clear there were no hard feelings here as Slay took to Twitter shortly after saying, "Nothing but love Philly!! Lets see where we heading next..."
The former third-round draft selection currently totals 513 tackles, 133 defended passes, 26 interceptions, and two touchdowns.
With Slay now on the market, all eyes will be on where he lands next.
One team that could have their eyes on him is the Pittsburgh Steelers. That was made clear when by Steelers wide receiver George Pickens promptly tweeted "Darius Slay is a Steeler."
Since the Steelers set their offense in the draft last season with quarterback Kenny Pickett and wide George Pickens, it does make sense that they could shift some more focus to the other side of the ball in this offseason.
Given the nature of his last contract, it's expected that only teams with some hefty cap space or the ability to rework things substantially to afford him will be able to bring on Slay.
Teams like the Las Vegas Raiders and the Tennessee Titans who have spent the least on cornerbacks have the best shot at budgeting a little more, and could definitely stand to make some defensive adjustments.
Regardless, there's no question that whichever squad acquires Slay is getting a boost.
