Around The SEC: Former Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel Opening Bar Near Aggies Campus
Former Texas A&M football star Johnny Manziel will return to College Station as a small business owner, announcing on his Instagram page the opening of "Johnny Manziel's Money Bar," reportedly located near the Aggies' campus.
In an interview with local newspaper the Eagle, co-owner J.D. Ybanez, a Texas A&M alum much like Manziel, went into more details on the Manziel's new business venture.
"It's funny because we had a few other names picked out and then obviously people called him 'Money Manziel' for his famous after-touchdown [celebration]," Ybanez said. "I just thought it was a really cool name and he loved it and the theme itself was really cool. It works."
Not many details about the bar itself are known at this time, but Ybanez teased that it will be a higher-end establishment.
"The systems we use for all of our other clubs are kind of incredible," Ybanez said. "We use pretty state-of-the-art stuff. It's going to be super high-tech and nice with some design aspects that are different than anything else you'll see in College Station."
No opening date has been revealed publicly yet, but Texas A&M opens their football season on September 2, so things would have to move quickly if Manziel's new bar wants to be open by the time the Aggies' season begins.
Manziel played for Texas A&M for two seasons, winning the Heisman Trophy during his freshman campaign in 2012. He was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the 2014 NFL Draft, but was released after two seasons, and hasn't signed with another NFL team since.
After his NFL days, Manziel played in various other leagues, including the Canadian Football League, the Alliance of American Football and Fan Controlled Football.
A documentary about Manziel's life and football career, titled Johnny Football, is scheduled for release on Netflix August 8.
