Around CFB: Greg McElroy Names His Favorite Tailgating Atmospheres Among College Football

College football analyst Greg McElroy was recently asked about his favorite tailgating atmospheres in college football on ESPN, and took the time to name them, with some of the most exciting coming up this season in 2023.
Starting with the SEC, he said LSU vs. Ole Miss is "always going to be top ten," with the two teams meeting in Oxford on September 30 this upcoming season.
"That one is always going to be top ten," McElroy said. "You get those two teams together, you get those two teams playing against each other … the fan bases are very different and yet very similar all at the same time."
McElroy then mentioned the annual Red River Rivalry game between Oklahoma and Texas at the Cotton Bowl during the Texas State Fair in Dallas.
“Texas-Oklahoma is always a very unique scene. You’re going to the State Fair. You wear your Crimson and Cream or you wear your Burnt Orange,” McElroy said. “That one to me is always going to be unique.”
McElroy also mentioned Oklahoma's other annual rivalry game against Oklahoma State in Bedlam, a game that could possibly be played for the final time before Oklahoma joins the SEC in 2024.
“I also think, this year, I want to go to Stillwater for Bedlam,” McElroy mentioned. “There’s no love lost between the two programs already. But you throw in the fact that those 2 teams are going to tee it up for the final time, perhaps … I think that one is going to be unique.”
The next rivalry on McElroy's list was the Backyard Brawl between Pittsburgh and West Virginia, which the Mountaineers will be hosting in Morgantown this upcoming season on September 16.
“You give me Pitt, you give me West Virginia, in Morgantown, good luck,” McElroy said. “Because that could be a scene there on the 16th of September. Now it might be pretty hostile. I’m not going to sit here and say it won’t be. It’s going to be pretty hostile, but I kind of like hostile when thinking about tailgating settings.”
Before ending the segment on the show, McElroy also did a quick shoutout to Appalachian State and their game day atmosphere in Boone, NC during the college football season.
"Appalachian State is awesome," McElroy said. "If you can get to Boone and just check it out. I've been to that stadium, I've seen it, that place is awesome."
