Mississippi State Baseball Gets 2-1 Win Over Ole Miss in Governor's Cup Behind Solid Pitching Effort

Sound pitching efforts propelled Mississippi State baseball to another victory over Ole Miss.

In a closely contested 2-1 victory against Ole Miss on Tuesday night, the Bulldogs took home the Governor's Cup.

Mississippi State's pitching cleared a path toward another Bulldog win, allowing just four hits by the Rebels for the entire game. Throughout the night. 10 strikeouts were delivered in one of the best performances on the mound the Bulldogs have had after they initially struggled greatly with the bullpen.

Evan Scary was credited with his first victory of the season after allowing a single hit in just the first two innings. KC Hunt struck out two batters in the bottom of the eighth and Aaron Nixon had his second save of the season striking out two of three batters in the ninth inning.

In the top of the first inning, Hunter Hines' ground-rule double pushed Colton Ledbetter across to score the first run of the game for the offense. The second and final time the Bulldogs got to the scoreboard on the night came in the top of the sixth inning when Luke Hancock doubled to left to score Dakota Jordan. David Mershon and Amani Larry had hits in the game as well, with the Rebs scoring just once at the bottom of the seventh inning.

"Usually they’re offensive," Mississippi State baseball head coach Chris Lemonis said after the win. "You don’t have many of these between our two teams. I think we’re both battling. On Tuesday night when you can feel a park like this, and playing a game that’s important to both of us for recruiting and our fan base, it’s nice to come out of here with a win.

The Bulldogs will be back in action Thursday at 6 p.m. in Knoxville against the Tennessee Volunteers.
