Jett Johnson Likes Closing Out Regular Season Against In-State Teams

The Mississippi State linebackers called it "Great" that Mississippi State had both Southern Miss and Ole Miss on schedule.

With an impressive 41-20 win on Saturday, Mississippi State is one win away from bowl eligibility. The Bulldogs have one final chance to get to where they want to be, and a loss will end the season.

One excellent contributor to the team's performance has been Jett Johnson.

The graduate student has played 43 games with 29 starts at Mississippi State, making him a team leader. Against Southern Miss, the interior linebacker collected a sack and an interception. In 2022, he led the SEC in total tackles with 115. Throughout his career he's collected 305 career tackles with 7.0 sacks.

Along with quarterback Will Rogers, the next game against Ole Miss will be Johnson's final game as a Bulldog barring a bowl invitation. The pressure is on for Thursday as the age-old rivalry draws near.

With one more win in mind, the Bulldogs are gearing up with interim head coach Greg Knox leading the team. The win against USM left the fans and the team in an excited and energetic place to motivate them for the annual showdown on Thanksgiving Day.

Fans were thankful for the win against USM, however, there will be a lot more to be thankful for if the Bulldogs can take the Egg Bowl trophy again. They would see six wins and bowl eligibility, while saying goodbye the seniors on a positive note.

It won't be easy, of course, as the No. 13 Rebels are 9-2, and coming off a 35-3 victory against ULM.

Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CT on Thursday at Davis Wade Stadium.
