Report: Mizzou Adding Quarterback Through Transfer Portal
The Missouri Tigers have added depth to the quarterback room through the transfer portal. According to a report from Pete Thamel of ESPN, Arizona State's Drew Pyne has committed to transfer to Missouri.
The addition comes weeks after backup quarterback and baseball pitcher Sam Horn was announced to be undergoing Tommy John surgery, which will keep him out for the 2024 football season.
Pyne will likely be Missouri's backup behind starter Brady Cook. Columbia will be the third stop in Pyne's career as he spent the 2023 season at Arizona State and the 2020-'22 seasons at Notre Dame.
According to Thamel's report, Pyne took a visit this past weekend to Missouri and will enroll this summer with three years of eligibility remaining.
The most playing time that Pyne saw was during the 2022 season when he started 10 games for Notre Dame after Tyler Buchner, who was originally designated as the starter, suffered a season-ending injury during week 2 of the season. In the 2022 season, Pyne completed 164 passes on 254 attempts for 2,021 yards, 22 touchdowns and six interceptions.
Pyne was on the other end of injury luck for 2023. He only appeared in two games for the Sun Devils, a 42-28 loss to No. 5 USC and a 29-0 loss to Fresno State, but suffered a hamstring injury during training camp and sustained a different leg injury against Fresno State.
Pyne adds some much needed experience to the Missouri quarterback room. In addition to Horn's surgery, the Tigers' quarterback room was also weakened by the transfer portal this offseason. Former Miami transfer Jake Garcia transferred to East Carolina after just one year at Missouri. Former four-star recruit Gabarri Johnson transferred to Oregon State after an uneventful freshman year.
Missouri will also be adding three-star freshman Aidan Glover to the 2024 roster. Pyne, however, provides stability and depth to what otherwise would've been a shaky quarterback room.
