Wolfpack College Summer Baseball Update
Friday was Austin Murr's time to shine among the three NC State baseball players in summer wood bat league play.
After mustering only two hits in his previous 18 at bats over four games, the junior first baseman matched that total in four trips to the plate to lead the LaCrosse Loggers of the Northwoods League to a 7-5 win against the Wisconsin River Rafters.
Murr and his teammates took care of business early, scoring all but on of their runs in the first three innings.
He doubled and scored as part of a three-run first, then singled, stole a base and scored again in the Loggers' two-run second. He was also reached base after getting hit by a pitch later in the game.
The productive performance helped raise Murr's season average back to .292 in the 16 games he's played in LaCrosse.
The only other Wolfpack player in action Friday was DeAngelo Giles of the High Point-Thomasville HiToms.
Giles' recent hot streak cooled off some on a night in which he went 0 for 2 with a pair of strikeouts before being lifted for a pinch-hitter in the High Point-Thomasville HiToms' 2-1 loss to the Wilson Tobs.
The freshman infielder is hitting .250 for the season with two homers, two doubles and eight RBI in the seven games he's played.
The third member of the State contingent in summer baseball, Jose Torres, got the night off Friday. His team, the Amarillo Sod Squad of the Texas Collegiate League, returns to action on Saturday against the Frisco Roughriders.
Torres is hitting .298 with 11 RBI and nine runs scored in 11 games.
