100 Seasons in Memorial Stadium: Setting the Records Straight
Postscript to a series commemorating 100 seasons of Nebraska football in Memorial Stadium. |
---|
Our Memorial Stadium series kicked off in May 2022, three months before the stadium’s 100th season began. The stadium records page, being one of the earliest installments, covered just the first 99 seasons. Now that the 100th season has played out, a few updates are in order — and one of them is a doozie.
We’ll start with the general ledger, where only the lines preceded by a star contain changes:
★ Overall record: 724-355-25 (.667) 1,104 games.
★ Home Record: 428-147-13 (.739) 588 games.
● Longest Home Win Streak: 47; 1991-98.
● Most Home Games Won: 8; 2001.
● Unbeaten Home Seasons: 33.
● Unbeaten and Untied Home Seasons: 27.
● Most Consecutive Winning Home Seasons: 46; 1969-2014.
● Fewest Home Games Won: 0; 1947, 1951, 1957.
★ Most Home Games Lost: 5; 1947, 1951, 1957, 2017, 2022.
The 2-5 home season in 2022 (4-8 overall) pulled down the Huskers’ winning percentage in Memorial Stadium from .746 to .739. Likewise, Nebraska’s overall winning clip from 1923 forward slid from .671 to .667. Below is a breakdown by decade. A sortable version is available at this HuskerMax link.
A few other categories from the records page require updates. Most notably, Georgia Southern’s 642 yards of total offense supplanted the Memorial Stadium opponent record of 633 set by Ohio State in 2017. That’s right, a Sun Belt team — playing its second game under a new head coach running a completely new offense — drove up and down the Memorial Stadium field like no other home opponent had ever done before. Coincidentally, both the Eagles and Buckeyes ran 86 plays in piling up their yardage.
As for most Husker losses to a single opponent in the stadium, 19 is the new number after Oklahoma tightened its grip on that category with a 49-14 win. The Sooners are now 19-20-2 in Lincoln since the stadium was built.
Also, the official tally of consecutive home sellouts has now grown from 382 to 389.
