Milt Tenopir, Smash-Mouth Football, and Northwestern.
In honor of Saturday's win against Northwestern and the clinic our running backs and Adrian Martinez put on, I decided to share this video from Mr. Pipeline himself, Milt Tenopir. In the clip above, Uncle Milt discusses "Smash-Mouth" football and why the fans fell in love with it so long ago.
When I was a wee boy, "Run The Damn Ball" wasn't just something your aggressive cousin drunkenly yelled at the TV in the garage. It was also our identity. We took pride in being a fourth-quarter team. We loved watching Warren Sapp suck air from a mask on the sidelines. We adored our fullbacks. We didn't care one lick that our quarterbacks couldn't throw the ball more than 17 yards with the wind at their back. We were a run-first team, and there was nothing anybody could do about it (I'm looking at you, Steve Spurrier).
The pipeline was a name to be feared.
Butttttttt, the game has changed. It's different now than it was in the '30s, '40s, '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s, and '90s. And the early 2000s. And if you play for Alabama. And if you were in Nebraska last Saturday.
We. Put. On. A. Clinic.
I long for the days when we won like we did Saturday but against teams that aren't Northwestern. Hopefully, those days will be back soon. If Scott can keep winning like this, we are about to see some changes in the way people say the name "Nebraska Cornhuskers."
They'll start putting some goddamn respect on it.
