Nebraska Football Gears Up for Golden Gophers

Matt Rhule previews next Thursday’s season opener, hopes simulated game has given Huskers a head start

The Nebraska football season is almost here. Proof came Friday with the first game-week press conference and the release of the first depth chart of 2023.

Coach Matt Rhule and half a dozen players previewed the Aug. 31 opener at Minnesota, a Thursday night affair that's just six days away. The press conference came the morning after the Huskers held a simulated game under the lights in Memorial Stadium. Rhule said he hoped the scrimmage would essentially serve as Game 1 when it comes to the old coaching adage that a team's greatest improvement comes between the first and second games.

Placekicker is a job that's still up for grabs between Tristan Alvano and Timmy Bleekrode. "We'll have one more day [Sunday] of competition," Rhule said." And to me the depth chart, it's like an organism. It's ever changing. I'm not a big 'Hey, set it stone' kind of guy."
