Nebraska's search for the next head football coach may be in the endgame.

For the first time in the 64-day-old process, a national reporter has put out a report on the next leader for Lincoln. Chris Low, ESPN senior writer, says Nebraska "has zeroed in" on Matt Rhule.

"Nebraska has zeroed in on former Carolina Panthers coach Matt Rhule as @HuskerFBNation’s next head coach, and the two sides hope to finalize a deal in the coming days, sources tell ESPN."

Rhule was fired by the NFL's Carolina Panthers last month after a 1-4 start. He previously coached at Temple and Baylor, improving both collegiate programs to double-digit wins in his third season at each stop.

The Panthers still owed Rhule more than $35 million at the time of his firing.

Rhule would replace Scott Frost, who went just 16-31 and was let go after a 1-2 start to this season. Mickey Joseph has served as interim head coach since then.
