Nebraska’s Young Receivers ‘Ready to Go’ After Extra Prep Time

Husker head coach Matt Rhule praises true freshmen’s speed ahead of Northwestern game

Thanks to the bye week, Nebraska's young wide receivers got extra time to prepare for more prominent roles in the wake of Marcus Washington's season-ending injury.

"Great week of practice. Great, really, two weeks," Rhule said after Thursday's practice. It was his last media availability before Saturday's home game against Northwestern.

"They are ready to go," Rhule continued. "I know this: They might be young, but they are as fast as any group of receivers in the country. Not very often you have 10.3, 10.4 guys out there. They have each made a play. Maybe not Jaidyn (Doss), but Jaylen (Lloyd) and Malachi (Coleman) have each made a play in games. Alex Bullock has made a couple big plays in games. Ty Hahn has made big plays. Billy (Kemp) is a baller, so they’re ready to play.”

Coleman, Lloyd and Doss are true freshmen, and Coleman is expected to start against Northwestern. Bullock and Hahn are sophomores, and Kemp is the veteran of the group as a senior transfer from Virginia.

Watching Thursday's practice and addressing the team were three prominent figures from Tom Osborne-era defenses at Nebraska: defensive coordinator Charlie McBride, secondary coach George Darlington and All-America defensive end Jared Tomich.

"To hear from those guys was really cool," Rhule said.

"There's a standard they want us to play at," Rhule said. "It's not just about the scoreboard. It's the way we play. That's our message to the players all the time. That doesn't mean we're not trying to win, it means we're trying to do something greater than just winning."
