Satterfield Talks Quarterbacks, Running Backs

Jeff Sims working his way back; 'creative' use of Nebraska's ball carriers on tap after position hit by injuries

Nebraska quarterback Jeff Sims appears on track to return to game action. Whether that happens this weekend against Louisiana Tech or sometime later is not yet known.

During Tuesday's practice, Sims "probably got 50-55 percent of the reps," said Marcus Satterfield, the Huskers' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

"We did a little team compete period," Satterfield said. "I called some stuff where he had to keep the ball and run, and he did a nice job with that."

Sims injured an ankle Sept. 9 against Colorado and sat out the Sept. 16 game against Northern Illinois. Heinrich Haarbarg started in his place against the Huskies.

Satterfield praised Haarberg's play on the field and command in the huddle during the 35-11 victory.

"He was highly competitive and he took care of the ball. ... For his first time out there -- I mean, that's a big deal. That's a Nebraska kid getting the start in Memorial Stadium. I can't imagine what that felt like for him. So he handled it well."

Regardless of who starts, "there are going to be certain times when both quarterbacks are playing," he said. "There are going to be times when they're going to be asked to go out there and help us move the ball because they’re too good of athletes to be standing over there with me."

The offense must replace running backs Gabe Ervin and Rahmir Johnson, both lost to season-ending injuries. "We've got guys in this organization that are very good athletes ... and we can be creative and get those guys in situations where they can be productive," Satterfield

Mentioning Anthony Grant, Emmett Johnson, Kwinten Ives and Trevin Luben, he said, "They come in all shapes and sizes, and until you get your chance, you really don't know what they're going to do."
