Huskers Prepare for ‘Explosive’ Opponent and Raucous Crowd at Purdue

Mickey Joseph: ‘We embrace playing in a hostile environment’

Mickey Joseph says Nebraska will need solid play in all three phases Saturday night at Purdue, where he expects a more hostile environment than what the Huskers faced last week at Rutgers.

"I think the boys did a great job at Rutgers with the so-called sellout crowd," the Huskers' interim head football coach said Tuesday. "...We hope Purdue has a sellout because at the end of the day we embrace playing in a hostile environment. You know, chaos, we embrace that. Controlled chaos, we embrace that in the kids. That really gets their focus."

The 4-2 Boilermakers, he said, are "an explosive offensive team, and the defense is top-10, top-20. It's a really good football team. It's a mature football team. They have done a really good job of keeping the kids in the program. That's part of the reason why they've been successful.”

Joseph said further juggling of the Huskers' much-maligned offensive line is possible as the staff continues to look for the "best five" up front.

On the injury front, Joseph said linebacker Luke Reimer and  cornerback Quinton Newsome "both looked good today" in practice and are "day to day" after leaving Friday night's game with injuries. Wide receiver Omar Manning, who injured an ankle against Rutgers, is also day to day, and "we'll see how he is at the end of the week."

Also speaking at Tuesday's game-week press conference were quarterback Casey Thompson, defensive lineman Ty Robinson, offensive lineman Ethan Piper and linebacker Nick Henrich.
