True Freshman Tristan Alvano Wins Huskers’ Placekicking Job

Matt Rhule speaks after Tuesday’s practice ahead of season opener at Minnesota

Tristan Alvano has won the battle for Nebraska's placekicking job.

Head football coach Matt Rhule named the true freshman from Omaha as the Huskers' starting kicker for Thursday night's season opener at Minnesota. Alvano had been in a battle with veteran Timmy Bleekrode for the top spot.

Speaking after Tuesday morning's practice, Rhule referenced Alvano's youth and said: "I'm sure there's gonna be some ups and downs, some highs and lows. There's gonna be that for the whole team, you know? ... But I'll tell you this: If the game comes down to the end and we've gotta go win it, I'm gonna put Tristan out there and believe he's gonna make it."

On the injury front, Rhule said offensive tackle Teddy Prochazka and wide receiver Marcus Washington would be available for the Minnesota game.

Rhule said he knew very little about Arik Gilbert's overnight arrest in a burglary case. He said the status of the transfer tight end would be determined later.
