Huskers to Be Short-Handed vs. Michigan
Nebraska will be without one of its regular starters at safety and perhaps its No. 1 quarterback Saturday against third-ranked Michigan.
Interim head coach Mickey Joseph announced the suspension of Myles Farmer on Tuesday after the sophomore safety's DUI arrest over the weekend.
Joseph also said quarterback Casey Thompson didn't practice Tuesday and continues to have problems gripping the ball after his injury two games ago against Illinois.
Joseph hopes to determine by Wednesday whether Thompson can play. If Thompson is a no-go, it's a choice once again between Chubba Purdy, who started last week against Minnesota, and Logan Smothers, who finished the game after Purdy struggled.
“I’m going to make a decision probably Thursday after I watch them both practice," Joseph said. He said one issue with Smothers, the stronger runner of the two, is that he needs to be a better practice player.
Addressing the Huskers' philosophy on offense, Joseph pointed to a need to play "Big Ten football," to chew up more game clock and to give the running game a chance to work. "You gotta try to slow it down. ... We gotta trust and be happy with three- and four-yard runs."
He said he has had that conversation with offensive coordinator Mark Whipple. How did that talk go? "That's between me and Whipple," Joseph said.
