Hannah Hidalgo Notches Triple-Double In Notre Dame Win Over Western Michigan
There’s a chance something spectacular will happen every time Hannah Hidalgo takes the court. It happened Thursday night at Purcell Pavilion as Notre Dame’s freshman point guard registered her first career triple-double in an 84-47 Irish (9-1) win over visiting Western Michigan (5-5).
Hidalgo, who had just recorded her second career double-double in Sunday’s win over Purdue, scored a game-high 26 points on 10 of 19 shooting with new career-highs 11 rebounds and 10 assists. She has scored at least 21 points in nine of the first 10 games of her career.
The Haddonfield, NJ native combined with senior forward Maddy Westbeld to push an Irish offense that was sluggish coming out of the gate. After Western Michigan used an early 7-0 run to take a five-point lead, the Irish used an 8-0 run to go up 15-11 at the game’s first media timeout. Hidalgo and Westbeld each had nine points by the end of the first quarter while combining to shoot 8 for 13.
Hildago opened second quarter with her only 3-pointer of the night to give the Irish a 14-point lead. She finished the first half with 17 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals. She and Westbeld, who had 11 by halftime, combined to go 12 for 24 in the game’s first 20 minutes.
Anna DeWolfe helped ignite a second half that saw Notre Dame outscore the Broncos 43-23. The grad transfer from Fordham used four 3-pointers to score all 12 of her second-half points. She finished by matching her season-high with 17 points thanks to connecting on 5 of 8 long range shots on the night.
Hidalgo hit 5 of 6 free throws to help the team hit 12 of 19 shots from the line. Western Michigan didn’t attempt a free throw until midway through the third quarter when Gabi Saxman went to the line and missed both. They finished the game 2 of 4 at the stripe after Kaitlyn Zaricki made a pair of technical foul shots in the fourth quarter after Hidalgo was whistled for the technical. Zaricki led WMU with 16 points.
The Irish dominated the boards 55-28 thanks to a career-best 12 rebounds from Kylee Watson. Twenty-three of the boards came on the offensive glass while owning a 44-24 advantage in the paint.
Notre Dame has won nine consecutive games since opening the season with a loss to currently No. 1 and unbeaten South Carolina. The Irish won’t play for 10 more days until they open ACC play at Syracuse on Dec. 31. The unranked Orange are 10-1 overall and 7-0 at home this season.
