Report: Notre Dame To Hire Micah Shrewsberry As Head Basketball Coach
According to a report from Pete Thamel of ESPN, Notre Dame is set to hire Micah Shrewsberry, which means the Irish will have a new head basketball coach for the first time in over 20 years. Shrewsberry is replacing Mike Brey, who is the school's all-time leader in wins.
Shrewsberry spent the last two seasons, compiling a 37-31 record. This past season Shrewsberry led the Nittany Lions to a 23-14 record and a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. It marked the first time since 2011 that Penn State made it to the tournament. Penn State's 76-59 win over Texas A&M marked the first Penn State tournament victory since 2001.
The Indianapolis native spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at Purdue. It was his second stint as an assistant under Boilermaker head coach Matt Painter (2011-13).
Shrewsberry also spent 10 seasons working with Brad Stevens. He spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Butler (2007-11) and then six seasons alongside Stevens with the Boston Celtics. The Celtics twice made the Eastern Conference Finals with Shrewsberry on staff.
At Butler, Shrewsberry was part of the Bulldog program that made back-to-back runs to the national championship game. Butler lost to Duke in the title game in 2010 and UConn in the title game in 2011.
