Notre Dame Women's Basketball Adds Grad Transfer Becky Obinma
Notre Dame women’s basketball has added a graduate transfer at a position of need. The Fighting Irish announced on Thursday that 6-2 forward Becky Obinma will join the team after spending the last two seasons at Pepperdine. She started her career with two seasons at Texas Christian. She redshirted her first season there.
"I’m thrilled to officially welcome Becky to our Notre Dame family,” Fighting Irish Head Coach Niele Ivey said in a release. "Becky brings experience, athleticism and depth to the post position. She has a great motor and contagious energy on and off the court that will fit perfectly with our team. I’m looking forward to adding her post presence and speed in the open court to enhance our offensive capabilities.”
Obinma averaged 6.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in 28 games and 19.7 minutes per game this past season. Her rebound total led the Waves and ranked sixth in the West Coast Conference. She blocked 23 shots as well. She averaged 7.5 points and 6.3 rebounds and blocked 40 shots during the 2021-2022 season.
The Menifee, Calif native is the second graduate transfer to join the Irish this offseason. She joins guard Anna DeWolfe, who transferred to Notre Dame from Fordham.
Obinma gives the Irish four front court members, with returning veterans Kylee Watson, Maddy Westbeld and Nat Marshall also on the roster. She fills the roster spot of Lauren Ebo, who transferred to Notre Dame from Texas last season. Obinma’s addition gives Notre Dame 12 scholarship players on its 2023-2024 roster.
