Olivia Miles To Miss Notre Dame Women's Basketball's NCAA Tournament Games
Notre Dame women’s basketball standout Olivia Miles will not play during her team’s NCAA Tournament run that is set to begin on Friday. Fighting Irish head coach Niele Ivey announced at her pre-NCAA Tournament press conference on Thursday that Miles is out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.
"She’s been working with our doctors and trainers over the last couple of weeks,” Ivey began. “And while it’s devastating not to have her she’s been progressing in rehab every day. She’s going to be an active cheerleader, like Dara (Mabrey), leading from a different capacity. We’ve determined that she’s going to have her surgery late next week. The current timetable for her return is that we hope that she’ll be back for the summer in order to participate for workouts.”
Miles suffered the injury late in the first half of Notre Dame’s regular-season ending 68-65 win at Louisville on Feb. 26. She celebrated her team’s ACC regular-season championship after that victory, but she was not able to play the following week in either of Notre Dame’s two games at the ACC Tournament.
Named an Associated Press Second Team All-American earlier this week, Miles ends her sophomore season averaging 14.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 2.0 steals per game. She is the only player in the nation averaging at least 14.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 2.0 steals.
Miles was leading the Irish in all four of those statistical categories at the time of her injury, but fellow sophomore Sonia Citron now leads the team with 14.7 points per game after scoring a total of 63 points in the last three games since Miles’ injury.
She is the second Notre Dame player to suffer a season-ending injury this season. Mabrey tore an ACL in a Jan. 22 win over Virginia.
The Fighting Irish have gone 2-1 in the games since Miles’ injury (including the half she played at Louisville). They open NCAA play on Thursday as the No. 3 seed in the Greenville 1 Regional and host No. 14 seed Southern Utah in their tournament opener at 3:30 pm EST Friday afternoon. A win would set up a game on Sunday for the right to advance to the Sweet 16.
