2023 NFL Draft: Final Projection For Notre Dame Tight End Michael Mayer

Here is the latest buzz around former Notre Dame legend Michael Mayer

We are inching closer and closer to the 2023 NFL Draft officially kicking off on Thursday, April 27th at 8 PM eastern time. This has been an incredibly entertaining and volatile draft class, with a ton of possibilities that have everyone extremely curious to see unfold.

Arguably the top tight end prospect in the 2023 class, former Notre Dame star Michael Mayer has been a player that has been on draft radars since his true freshman season with the Irish. The 6-4, 252-pound star has been a fan favorite for several years and is now projected to hear his name called on the first day of the draft.

Let’s take a look on the latest on Mayer, which includes what to expect, a little background and a final projection for where he gets selected.

CAREER SNAPSHOT

Mayer ended his Irish career as arguably the best player at a position that the program has produced so well historically. In just three seasons, Mayer set the overall records for receptions (180), receiving yards (2,099) and touchdowns (18) by a Notre Dame tight end. He also owns the school's single season record in catches (71), receiving yards (840) and receiving touchdowns (9) for a tight end.

Standing alone in the record books at tight end at the University of Notre Dame is quite the accomplishment. That is especially true when you reminisce about names like Dave Casper, Ken MacAfee, Mark Bavaro, Irv Smith, Derek Brown, Tyler Eifert, John Carlson, Anthony Fasano and Kyle Rudolph, all of whom have dawned the blue and gold.

WHAT I’M HEARING

The Mayer over analyzing is something that is definitely more media driven than it is around the league. There is, without question, a talking point in both circles about dynamic ability for the Notre Dame star. He is viewed more in the vein of your throwback in-line tight end, who has the ability to work the middle of the field and block at a high level with his combination of size, physicality and smoothness.

On the media side, the floor is nearly talked about as much. Everything is the ceiling and that just isn’t how NFL teams operate. The latest buzz is that Mayer is considered about as clean of a prospect as anyone in the 2023 NFL Draft.

FINAL PROJECTION

Mayer has been viewed as a potential first round selection and that has not changed throughout the process. He has consistently checked boxes as a player and person throughout.

The clock starts when the Green Bay Packers get on the clock with pick No. 13 and it probably ends with the Cincinnati Bengals with the No. 28 selection. It’s hard to imagine him falling out of that 15 pick window, especially with the Bengals having a need and Mayer being a local product.

I wouldn’t put too much stock into the mock drafts that currently have Mayer falling out of the first round.
