Can Notre Dame Still Compete For National Championships?

Discussing whether or not Notre Dame is capable of still competing for championships

Notre Dame has not won a national championship in 34 seasons, and there are questions about whether or not the Fighting Irish have the ability to compete for another championship.

Those outside of the Fighting Irish program certainly have their doubts, and I've seen articles - absurd as they might be - that have made the case that Notre Dame isn't capable of winning a championship again, at least not in the current landscape.

In the latest Irish Breakdown podcast I take a deep dive into this topic and discuss the reasons why Notre Dame can't win a title (according to others), and what Notre Dame must do to prove them wrong.

As part of the show I discuss some of the reasons why Notre Dame is said to not be capable of competing for championships. Those topics include academic restrictions, top players not being interested in a strong academic program, location and Notre Dame not being competitive in the NIL sphere.

I follow that up with analysis about why I think those assumptions are incorrect.

Of course, Notre Dame not having won in 34 seasons is also something that is often pointed to. It should be noted that when Georgia won a title in 2021 it snapped a streak of 40 seasons without a title. Ohio State went 34 seasons without a title before winning one in 2002. Texas went 34 seasons without a title before winning one in 2005. LSU went 44 seasons without a title before winning one in 2003. Clemson went 34 seasons before winning a title in 2016.

Alabama went through a stretch of 29 seasons where it only won one title, so this drought by Notre Dame is not at all uncommon.

I wrap the show up by breaking down the ingredients needed to be a championship program, beginning with hiring a dynamic head coach.
