Roughly 110 miles separates the campuses of Notre Dame and Purdue, but the gulf that separates the two Indiana women’s basketball programs with national championships to their credit is currently much deeper. With Hannah Hidalgo leading the charge in five-star Irish talent, Notre Dame blew past the Boilermakers 76-39 Sunday afternoon at Purcell Pavilion.

Hidalgo scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Irish to their eighth straight win since a season-opening loss to current No. 1 South Carolina. The freshman point guard notched eight of her points in a first quarter that saw Notre Dame jump out to an 11-0 lead before a 7-0 Purdue run. The Irish led 20-11 at the end of the first 10 minutes of play.

Purdue’s first points didn’t come until the 5:07 mark of the first quarter on a layup by Abbey Ellis. She led the Boilermakers with eight points on 4 of 14 shooting.

Hidalgo registered the second double-double of her young career with a career-high 10 rebounds. She was the only player in double figures in the first half but took an elbow to the eye in the final seconds of the half and went to the locker room early. She showed no ill effects in a second half that saw her score 13 points on 5 of 10 shooting. The New Jersey native added eight assists and seven steals. It helped the Irish score 26 points off 21 Purdue turnovers.

Nat Marshall continued her hot streak as well by scoring 14 points. It’s the fifth consecutive double figure scoring game for the senior from Queens, NY. She added seven rebounds and a career-high six blocked shots.

Maddy Westbeld scored 15 for the Irish with 10 rebounds to run her current double-double streak to three straight games. It is her fifth double-double of the season overall.

Notre Dame hit 31 of 61 shots (51%) while holding Purdue to 14 of 57 (25%). The Irish win evens the all-time series with Purdue at 14-14. The teams played in all but one season from 1991-2013, but Sunday’s game was the first regular season meeting between the old rivals since the series ended in 2013. It was the first overall meeting since the Irish beat the Boilermakers in the 2017 NCAA Tournament at Purcell.
