What to Know - Notre Dame: Fighting Irish head coach Marcus Freeman heads into his second season at the helm looking to win a season opener for the first time. Freeman has a new offensive coordinator and play caller (Gerad Parker), new quarterback coach (Gino Guidugli) and new offensive line coach (Joe Rudolph) on the offensive side of the ball. There were no full-time defensive staff changes but special teams coordinator Marty Biagi is in his first season as well.
Wake Forest graduate transfer Sam Hartman is in his first and only season at Notre Dame. He brings 110 career touchdown passes and 12,967 yards with him. He enters the season needing 32 touchdown passes to move to No. 2 all-time in FBS history. The veteran quarterback will look to bring along a group of talented but relatively inexperienced group of Irish receivers this season.
What to Know – Navy: Navy starts this season in the same situation Notre Dame was in last year, with its former defensive coordinator, Brian Newberry, promoted to head coach on the heels of the departure of the program’s all-time winningest coach (Ken Niumatalolo).
Newberry hired Grant Chestnut to run and potentially elevate Navy’s triple option offense. Chestnut coached under former Navy head coach Paul Johnson at both Navy and Georgia Tech before becoming offensive coordinator at FCS Kennesaw State. He oversaw a triple option there that ranked 10th in the FCS last season with 232.2 rushing yards per game, while also passing for 136.8 yards per game. Navy's option offense averaged 241.2 rushing yards and just 85.7 passing yards per game last season.
The Midshipmen return nine starters from a defense that limited Notre Dame to just 66 rushing yards in last year’s 35-32 Irish victory. Navy ranked No. 3 in the nation against the run last year, allowing just 88.9 yards per game.
Saturday’s game marks the 96th all-time meeting between Notre Dame and Navy. August 26 is the earliest on the calendar the two teams have ever met. The previous earliest meeting was Sept. 1, 2012, which was also the last time the two teams played in Ireland, that Notre Dame won 50-10.
