Matt Balis Resigns As Notre Dame Strength Coach
It appears the tumultuous offseason for Notre Dame has not ended, as the school announced that strength coach Matt Balis has resigned his position a day before the team begins fall camp.
"I want to thank Coach Balis for all of the work he put into elevating our program,” head coach Marcus Freeman said in a release. “I have a tremendous amount of respect for who he is as a coach and a man."
"For the time being, Fred Hale will lead our strength and conditioning program. We have an innovative sports performance team who collaborated with Coach Balis and me in designing our program and Fred will continue to implement that plan."
This is certainly a big loss for the Notre Dame program, especially from a timing standpoint. Balis has been a vital figure in the Notre Dame resurgence in recent seasons. Notre Dame had just two 10+ win seasons in the six years prior to his arrival, but Notre Dame has gone 63-14 since Balis arrived in 2017, and has had just one season with fewer than 10 wins.
Notre Dame players have often been standouts at the NFL Scouting Combine during his tenure, and it's not a coincidence that offensive line play has been good during his tenure as well.
Balis came to Notre Dame prior to the 2017 season after serving as the strength coach at UConn, where he worked under former Notre Dame defensive coordinator Bob Diaco. He arrived after Notre Dame's 4-8 disaster in 2016, and he was a major factor in the turnaround.
As stated in the statement from Notre Dame, Fred Hale will serve as the interim strength coach.
