Benjamin Morrison Named To The Jim Thorpe Award Watch List

Notre Dame cornerback Benjamin Morrison has been named to the 2023 Jim Thorpe Award watch list

Notre Dame cornerback Benjamin Morrison continues to pile up preseason recognition, this time being named to the Jim Thorpe Award Watch List. This comes after Morrison earned Freshman All-American honors in 2022, and he enters his sophomore campaign as one of the nation's top corners.

Morrison has earned a lot of preseason All-American honors ahead of the 2023 season. ESPN named him to their preseason All-American squad, and both Lindy's Sports and the Walter Camp Football Foundation named him to their second team preseason All-American squads. Pro Football Focus ranked Morrison as the 30th best returning college football player in the country.

The Arizona native racked up 33 tackles, six interceptions and four pass break ups as a true freshman in 2022. Morrison's breakout game came in the 35-14 win over then 4th-ranked Clemson. His first career interception came in that game with Clemson deep in its own territory, which set up a Notre Dame touchdown. Morrison took care of business by himself with his second pick of the game, returning it 96 yards for a score.

Two weeks later, Morrison set a new career high with three interceptions in a 44-0 win over Boston College. That tied the Notre Dame single-game record and cemented Morrison as the best freshman cornerback in the country.

Morrison and senior Cam Hart are expected to form one of the nation's best cornerback tandems in 2023.

The Thorpe Award was first handed out in 1986, with Baylor standout Thomas Everett winning the honor. No Notre Dame player has ever won the Thorpe Award. Last season's winner was TCU cornerback Tre'Vius Hodges-Tomlinson.
