Breaking Down Notre Dame OC Candidate Andy Ludwig

Irish Breakdown took a deeper dive into Notre Dame offensive coordinator candidate Andy Ludwig

Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman is in search of a new offensive coordinator, and the most recent candidate to be on campus and interview was Utah offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig. The long-time offensive coordinator was on campus for two days as part of his interview for the opening at Notre Dame.

On Saturday, Irish Breakdown took a deeper dive into Ludwig as a coach. You can listen to that here:

Our video began with a look at Ludwig's past coaching stops. His first FBS offensive coordinator job was at Fresno State, a job he held from 1998-2001. That was followed by stints at Oregon (2002-04), Utah (2005-08), California (2009-10), San Diego State (2011-12), Wisconsin (2013-14), Vanderbilt (2015-18) and again at Utah (2019-present).

We discussed the variety of production and talent he produced at each stop, including a quarterback that passed for 4,800 yards in a season (David Carr, Fresno State), a running back that rushed for over 2,500 yards (Melvin Gordon, Wisconsin) and a year in which he had two receivers with over 1,300 yards (Rodney Wright and Bernard Berrian, Fresno State).

During the show we also discussed Ludwig's coaching philosophy. We didn't focus on X's and O's and instead focused on the foundational principles of what we've seen at all of his stops. We also discussed how Ludwig gets more production from his offenses compared to previous coaches at those schools, and what followed.

We wrapped up the show discussing how landing Ludwig would impact the 2023 and 2024 Notre Dame recruiting classes. Here's a hint, we believe the talent fits what Ludwig believes in very, very well.

Note: This video was recorded prior to the news that Harry Hiestand was retiring from coaching.
