Notre Dame Center Zeke Correll Named To The Rimington Trophy Watch List
Notre Dame players continue to see their names on watch lists for top awards, and this time it is senior center Zeke Correll that earned the recognition. Correll was named to the watch list for the Rimington Trophy, which goes annually to the nation's top center.
Former Notre Dame standout Jarrett Patterson was named to the Rimington Trophy watch list a year ago, but during the spring Correll had an outstanding performance, which thrust him into the starting lineup at center. When Patterson returned to the lineup after an offseason injury he moved to guard.
Correll has since emerged as one of the leader's of the Notre Dame offense. In 2022 he also showed he is a far more effective player at center after he started several games at guard the season prior. Like the rest of the line, Correll got off to a bit of a slow start in 2022, but by season's end he was playing very good football, and the expectation is that he'll take his game to a higher level in year two as a starting center.
Notre Dame is expected to have one of the nation's best offensive lines in 2023, and Correll's experience and strong play up the middle are keys to making that happen. With new starters at both guard spots, Correll's leadership will be needed if the interior of the line is going to come together and play at the level needed.
The Rimington Trophy was first awarded in 2000, and heading into the 2023 season no Fighting Irish center has ever won the award. It is named after former Nebraska star Dave Rimington, who played for the Cornhuskers from 1979 to 1982 before being drafted in the first round of the vaunted 1983 NFL Draft.
