Notre Dame has suffered another tough injury this spring, with rising junior cornerback Benjamin Morrison being the latest to suffer a spring-ending injury. According to Notre Dame, Morrison had surgery yesterday to repair an injury to his shoulder, which will cost him the remainder of the spring.

Morrison is one of the top returning cornerbacks in all of college football, and the Arizona native was expected to be one of Notre Dame's top defenders. The injury will cost him the rest of the spring, but that's not the concern for him or the Irish. Morrison has plenty of experience, so the extra reps in the spring aren't going to be a huge blow. The health of his shoulder by the time we get to the fall is a much bigger question mark at this point.

Notre Dame needs a healthy Morrison if it's going to once again have one of the nation's best cornerback tandems. Sophomore Christian Gray and junior Jaden Mickey are battling it out for the spot opposite Morrison. With the rising junior out, Gray could certainly get some work in the boundary, a position he played at times last season. The Irish could also simply insert veteran Clarence Lewis into that spot while Morrison is out. Lewis started at boundary cornerback in 2021 and early in 2022 before being supplanted by Morrison.

Morrison was a freshman All-American in 2022 when he picked off six passes, including three in a win over Boston College. While Morrison intercepted just three passes in 2023, he did rack up 10 pass break ups. His 13 passes defensed in 2023 were more than the 10 he had in 2022.

Morrison is the second Notre Dame standout to go out with an injury this spring. Quarterback Riley Leonard also could miss the rest of the spring after having another surgery on his injured ankle. Notre Dame was already without standout tight end Mitchell Evans, who will miss the spring after suffering a knee injury in November.

Team doctor Brian Ratigan performed the surgery on Morrison.
