Notre Dame’s 2023 season opener against Navy is just five days away and the Fighting Irish will enter the new season with minimal injuries.

Two players who will definitely miss this Saturday’s opener in Dublin, Ireland are tight end Kevin Bauman and defensive lineman Aiden Gobaira. Both suffered season ending knee injuries during training camp and Irish head coach Marcus Freeman said at his Monday press conference that both have begun their recoveries with “successful” ACL surgeries.

"Both (are) recovering well,” Freeman said. "They’re starting their rehab towards getting back.”

This is the second year in a row that Bauman has torn his ACL. He suffered a broken leg that limited his 2021 season as well.

The only injury to a possible starter is starting center Zeke Correll, who hopes to be healthy enough to go in Saturday’s game. Correll suffered a left ankle injury that limited his practice availability last week. Freeman is hopeful that he will be a go this weekend.

"He’s been progressing really well,” Freeman said of Correll. "He’ll practice today and we expect him to be able to go. He’s progressing really well. I want to see him go out there in practice today. We kind of held him out last week but today they’ll push him to go. He’s been doing a great job in rehab and recovery, so I think today will tell us a lot.”

Correll did not practice when the media was present at last Tuesday’s (8/15) practice. He wore a brace on the ankle and worked out in the injury tent. He was back in uniform at the next day’s practice, but was noticeably limping and did not take first team reps when the media was present. Sophomore Ashton Craig took first team reps when Correll was out. Craig is listed as the No. 2 center on this week’s depth chart.

Freeman also said senior Michael Carmody will be out this week.

"Michael Carmody had hand surgery,” Freeman explained. "He fell in practice last week and ended up breaking a bone in his hand, so he had hand surgery last week but he’ll make the trip over to Ireland with us.”
