We are less than 100 days away from Notre Dame kicking off its 2023 season. The Irish will head to Dublin, Ireland to begin its season against the Navy Midshipmen. Its year two for head coach Marcus Freeman, and expectations are that Notre Dame will build on its 9-4 campaign in year one.

In the latest Irish Breakdown podcast I was joined by Tim O'Malley of Irish Illustrated to discuss what expectations should be for Notre Dame in Freeman's second season.

The show kicks off with a more big picture discussion that focuses on what we will learn about Freeman and his staff in year two. Freeman won't reach his full potential as a coach in year two, but this season will teach us a lot about the chops he has for the job. We went through what we want to see from Freeman as he looks to take the program to greater heights.

Next we dive into the floor vs. ceiling debate regarding the Notre Dame football team in 2023. That is followed by a breakdown of the aspects of the team that will have the most to do with Notre Dame reaching its full potential, or falling short. Of course there was plenty of discussion about quarterback Sam Hartman and the Irish defensive line.

Other topics we discussed during the show and in the mailbag:

*** The concern about depth at running back after the loss of Logan Diggs, and the injury concern about Jadarian Price.

*** We dove into the Notre Dame receiving corps and discussed it from several different views. Not only did we answer a question about who will lead the team in touchdown catches, but we talked about the impact that Tobias Merriweather and Deion Colzie could bring to the offense in 2023, the steadiness of Jayden Thomas, and what we might see from freshmen Jaden Greathouse and Rico Flores, and the transition for Chris Tyree.

*** The important role that the defensive line will play in Notre Dame reaching its full potential as a team. We focused on the potential impact of players like Jordan Botelho and Rylie Mills, and why they must turn their potential into production.

*** What to expect from the Notre Dame linebackers, especially veterans JD Bertrand and Jack Kiser.
