Notre Dame Guard Rocco Spindler Is Out For The Season
Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman announced that junior guard Rocco Spindler would miss the remainder of the season after suffering a knee injury. Spindler is the second starting offensive player to go out with a season-ending knee injury, joining tight end Mitchell Evans.
Spindler started the first ten games of the season at right guard, having won the starting role in fall camp. Spindler had some good moments during his first season as a starter, especially in the run game, but that progress has now been halted due to this injury.
With Spindler out the Irish will likely turn to sophomore Billy Schrauth as the new starter. Schrauth spent much of the spring as the top left guard, but that spot ultimately went to Pat Coogan. Schrauth began the season as the backup at left guard, but in his most recent
Schrauth currently lacks ideal experience, having played just 76 snaps this season, but he's arguably the most talented interior player on the roster. Schrauth will now get his shot to get the necessary reps to gain the experience he needs to turn his potential into production. Schrauth is a more athletic player inside than both Coogan and Spindler.
Freeman also noted that fifth-year senior Zeke Correll is battling a concussion, which means sophomore Ashton Craig steps into the top center spot until Correll comes back.
Notre Dame's offensive line had been struggling in recent weeks, so it will be interesting to see what this shake up does. Does it get the offensive line back on track, or does it make a tough situation worse. We should start to find that answer this weekend against Wake Forest.
