Notre Dame Hires Loren Landow As New Director Of Football Performance
Notre Dame has made it official, Loren Landow is the new Trematerra Family Director of Football Performance. Head coach Marcus Freeman and the program announced this addition to the staff this evening.
“When we sat down to evaluate what exactly we wanted from this role, we identified several characteristics as being critical to the success of the position,” Freeman said in an official release. “We need someone who can reinforce the vision of the head coach and uphold the standards in discipline that it takes to create a championship environment. We need someone who has a background in group training, yet the expertise to individualize training to meet specific individual’s needs and goals. We need someone who can enhance our approach in regards to power, explosion and speed development.
"Loren Landow is all of these things," continued Freeman. "He has demonstrated incredible expertise in the strength and conditioning field and will truly help us advance our sports performance program and our sports science knowledge. Loren has worked both in a team setting and in the private sports performance industry, and his ability to elevate his athletes’ production is impressive, particularly when it comes to speed and explosiveness. He is an authentic and commanding leader, with an alpha personality and those are the traits I was looking for when it comes to fulfilling such a vital position on our staff.”
Landow spent the 2018-22 seasons as the strength coach for the Denver Broncos, which was his first venture into being the director of a team strength program. His reputation was built on individual training of professional athletes in multiple sports, but there are a number of high profile current and former NFL players who were clients of Landow.
Current San Francisco 49ers star running back Christian McCaffrey and current Buffalo Bills edge rusher and former Bronco Von Miller are two of his top clients still playing in the NFL. Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning and former Notre Dame and Denver Broncos offensive tackle Ryan Harris have also worked with Landow.
"He is one of the best," Harris told Irish Breakdown. "I trained with him for seven years, including before and after winning the Super Bowl.
"Great get by Coach Freeman and further proof he wants the best around him."
Landow has also trained players getting ready for the NFL Draft, and according to Landow Performance's website, he has trained over 20 first round NFL Draft picks.
The new Notre Dame strength coach has big shoes to fill. From 2017-22 the position was held by Matt Balis, who was considered one of the best strength coaches in college football. Landow doesn't have that same reputation as a college strength coach since he's never held that position in college. It doesn't take much research to realize, however, that in the field he has spent his career, as a performance coach working with individual athletes prior to his time with the Broncos, he too is considered one of the best in his field.
Freeman is banking on Landow being able to transition into this role and thrive in the same manner he did as a private performance coach.
