Notre Dame Interviews Matt Luke For Its Offensive Line Position

Notre Dame is in search of a new offensive line coach, and it interviewed former Georgia OL coach for that position

Irish Breakdown has learned that Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman interviewed former Georgia offensive line coach and Ole Miss head coach Matt Luke for its offensive line position.

Luke arrived at Notre Dame yesterday for the interview as the Irish look to replace Harry Hiestand, who retired  earlier this month. Luke retired from coaching following Georgia's 2021 national championship in order to spend more time with his children, who are early high school and middle school aged.

His family will remain a very important part of Luke's decision to stay retired, or to get back into coach. According to sources, the interview went extremely well and Luke impressed everyone at Notre Dame. Whether or not that means he chooses to come out of retirement remains to be seen.

According to another source, Notre Dame has helped Luke gather information about the local school districts in order to help Luke and his wife, Ashley, have everything they would need to make a decision about coming out of retirement, or not.

Luke was considered one of the best offensive line coaches in college football prior to his early retirement at the age of just 45. He is certainly the quality and caliber of coach that is ideally suited to step in and build on what was established in 2022.

The Mississippi native was the head coach at Ole Miss from 2017-19, which came after he was the program's co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach from 2012-16 under Hugh Freeze. Prior to that stint with his alma mater, Luke was the co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Duke from 2008-11, working under head coach David Cutcliffe. Luke spent the 2007-8 seasons as the offensive line/tight ends coach at Tennessee under Philip Fulmer. Luke also had a stint as the OL/TE coach at Ole Miss from 2002-05, also under Cutcliffe.

Luke is very well respected in coaching circles as both an offensive line coach and recruiter. His decision to step away from coaching for his family is one I respect a great deal.
