Joe Alt, Benjamin Morrison Earn Lindy's Preseason All-American Honors
The preseason honors continue to roll in for Notre Dame stars Joe Alt and Benjamin Morrison. The Fighting Irish duo were named preseason All-Americans in the Lindy's Sports College Football National 2023 Preview.
Alt has been a consensus first team All-American on all the preseasons lists that have been released so far, and that holds true in the Lindy's All-American squad. Morrison has been a first team player on some All-American lists, but he's not a consensus player. The Arizona native was listed on the second team list by Lindy's.
Alt was outstanding as a sophomore for Notre Dame and earned first team All-American honors from the Associated Press, Pro Football Focus, CBS Sports, ESPN, and second-team honors from Sporting News, Football Writers Association of America, AFCA, USA Today and The Athletic.
Morrison was named a consensus first-team Freshman All-American after picking off six passes as a rookie.
There is no debate about Alt being a first-team preseason All-American, but there is room for debate with Morrison. My issue with the Lindy's rankings isn't that Morrison is on the second team, which is fair, it's that Denzel Burke of Ohio State is one of the players on the first team. The hype that Burke continues to receive is a bit head-scratching, especially compared to players like Morrison.
Burke finished with 34 tackles last season while Morrison had 33. Morrison, however, picked off six passes and had four pass break ups, whereas Burke had just five pass break ups and no interceptions. According to Pro Football Focus, Burke allowed a 56.1% completion rate, 332 passing yards and three touchdowns in 11 games. Morrison allowed just a 43.1% completion rate, 296 yards and just one touchdown in 13 games.
Ohio State had six players on the All-American list, which includes three defensive players. Wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., linebacker Tommy Eichenberg and cornerback Denzel Burke were named to the first team, while wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, defensive end JT Tuimoloau and safety Lathan Ransom were named to the third team.
USC had two players on the first team (QB Caleb Williams, S Calen Bullock) and Clemson had three players on the second team (DT Tyler Davis, LB Barrett Carter, LB Jeremiah Trotter Jr.). Stanford kicker Josh Karty was named to the first team and Duke offensive tackle Graham Barton was named to the second team.
