Notre Dame All-American offensive tackle Joe Alt has announced he is declaring for the NFL Draft, and the star blocker also won't be playing in Notre Dame's bowl game against Oregon State.

This was an expected move for Alt, who is expected to be a top pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. In fact, some mock drafts have Alt projected as a Top 5 overall pick.

Alt was not a highly regarded recruit when he signed with Notre Dame out of Totino Grace High School in Fridley, Minnesota. He didn't see much action early in his freshman season, but by the middle of the season he was seeing action as a blocking tight end before being inserted into the starting lineup against Virginia Tech.

From that moment it was obvious that Alt had a chance to be a star. He was a Freshman All-American for the Irish that season, and he quickly emerged as one of the nation's best blockers.

Alt earned more honors as a sophomore when he was named a first team All-American by the Associated Press, ESPN, CBS Sports and Pro Football Focus. He was one of the more steady blockers in the country all season, but by season's end he started to show dominant traits.

He is one the verge of earning unanimous All-American honors as a junior, with Sporting News, Walter Camp, FWAA and the Associated Press all naming him a first-team All-American.

That carried over into his junior season, with Alt earning first-team preseason All-American honors. Not only did he remain steady on the blindside, Alt became a more physically dominant player this past season, with his run blocking taking another jump. He was Notre Dame's best offensive player all season and he protected quarterback Sam Hartman and opened up running room for star running back Audric Estime.

Alt looks to continue Notre Dame's string of high draft picks at left tackle. All four of Notre Dame's last four starting left tackles were drafted in the first round (3) or second round (1). Alt is expected to get the first round selections back on track.
