Notre Dame rising junior lineman Joe Alt is ranked as the No. 1 offensive tackle returning to college football for the 2023 season. That is where Alt was ranked by Lindy's Sports in its College Football National 2023 Preview magazine.

It should be no surprise that Alt earned first-team All-American honors by Lindy's, but the No. 1 overall tackle was certainly an accomplishment for Alt. Alt is one of four returning offensive tackles that get mention as being in contention for the top tackle honors. The other three blockers are Penn State's Olu Fashanu, Duke's Graham Barton and Alabama's JC Latham.

Lindy's Sports is clearly very high on Alt, who was the top ranked offensive tackle in college football last season according to Pro Football Focus.

"Alt, the 6-8, 315-pound son of 13-year Kansas City Chiefs Hall-of-Famer John Alt, is on a fast track to the bigs. It's a meteoric rise at a position that goes to the most physically and mentally gifted player on the offensive line .... Heading into his junior season, Alt is the consensus best left tackle in the country. He was voted as such by the Associated Press as a true sophomore." - Lindy's Sports

Last season, Alt was named a first-team All-American by the Associated Press, Pro Football Focus, CBS Sports, ESPN. Alt was named a second-team All-American by Sporting News, Football Writers Association of America, AFCA, USA Today and The Athletic.

Alt was a steady force for Notre Dame last season. He didn't allow a single sack all season, but by the end of the season he had also developed into an impactful run defender. Now that he enters his junior season, Alt is poised to continue Notre Dame's brilliance over the last decade at left tackle. A case could be made that no team in the country has produced left tackles with the consistency that Notre Dame has.

Alt has a chance to be the fifth straight Notre Dame starting left tackle to get picked in the second round or higher, and the fourth to go in the first round. A dominant junior season could also make him the fourth straight Notre Dame left tackle to earn consensus All-American honors. That list includes Ronnie Stanley, Mike McGlinchey and Liam Eichenberg. Zack Martin kicked off this outstanding left tackle play back in 2010.
