Notre Dame has lost a pair of players to season-ending knee injuries according to head coach Marcus Freeman. During today's press conference, Freeman announced that senior tight end Kevin Bauman and sophomore defensive end Aiden Gobaira are out for the season with knee injuries. The Irish head coach said both players suffered torn ACL's during camp.

Bauman was expected to be a good depth player at tight end for the Irish this season, but he is now out. Bauman has battled knee injuries throughout his career, and the latest is wiping out his entire senior season. Bauman caught 5 passes for 59 yards in his first three seasons, making him the team's most experienced and productive returning tight end.

With Bauman out, junior Mitchell Evans and sophomore Holden Staes will handle the primary tight end duties. Junior Davis Sherwood is also listed as a tight end, but he handles a lot of the H-back/tight end spot in the short-yardage/goal line situations. With Eli Raridon also likely out to begin the season, that leaves freshman Cooper Flanagan potentially in position to have to play this season if a third true tight end is needed early in the season.

Gobaira was having a strong fall camp, and made two big plays in the open practice. But later in the session he went down with a non-contact injury that ended up being the torn ACL. It's disappointing for Gobaira, who was pushing to be a key depth player at field end for the Irish. Notre Dame could have some depth issues at the field end position, especially if there is another injury.

Freeman also noted that freshman wide receiver KK Smith remains out with a shoulder injury, but he wasn't willing to say Smith would miss the entire season. Smith's injury occurred prior to his arrival at Notre Dame.
