Notre Dame OC Tommy Rees To Interview With Alabama

Notre Dame offensive coordinator Tommy Rees will interview for the open position at Alabama

Irish Breakdown has confirmed the report from Chris Low of ESPN that Notre Dame offensive coordinator Tommy Rees plans to interview for the same position at Alabama.

Alabama head coach Nick Saban reached out to Rees after former coordinator Bill O'Brien left for the New England Patriots. According to Low's report, Rees is slated to meet with Saban and interview for the position at some point today. Rees and Saban spoke yesterday and the interest was expressed.

Rees has been Notre Dame's offensive coordinator since 2020 and the quarterback's coach since 2017.

Notre Dame has shown promise on offense in recent seasons, but issues at quarterback stalled the offense at times in 2022. The Irish offense broke out with a 45-point, 558-yard outburst in the Gator Bowl against South Carolina, a game Notre Dame won 45-38.

Alabama has had five different offensive coordinators in the last seven seasons, and they will be on their sixth coordinator in eight seasons starting in 2023. According to Low, Rees has emerged as Saban's top target, but right now it is unclear if Rees will take the job or if he'll decide to return to Notre Dame.

The interesting dynamic is that Alabama clearly has a much better track record on offense in recent seasons. Looking ahead to 2023, however, the Irish have the better quarterback situation, a deep group of skill players and they are expected to have one of the best offensive lines in the country.

Rees must decide if he wants to be the next in line at Alabama, or stay at his alma mater and build it to that level offensively.
